(BANG) - Noomi Rapace thinks 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' was so popular because the main character is a "survivor."
The 30-year-old actress played Lisbeth Salander in the Swedish trilogy of films based on the hit novels and said that the story's popularity -including a forthcoming big budget Hollywood remake - is all due to the strong central character.
She said: "I think Lisbeth is the key. She's not like any other character we've seen before and people around the world can relate to her. We've waited for someone like her because she is such a survivor."
The character of Lisbeth is a rape victim who takes revenge on her attackers and Noomi thinks it is "liberating" that she takes the law into her own hands.
She said: "It is very common for someone who has been raped or sexually abused to turn it inwards and begin to hate themselves, so I think it is liberating that Lisbeth does it her way an actually goes after the b*****d and chases him down."
The Hollywood remake will star Daniel Craig and newcomer Rooney Mara and will be directed by David Fincher.
The original novel, written by Stieg Larsson, has sold in 40 million copies in 44 countries, and all three in the series have topped the New York Times Best Seller lists. (C) BANG Media International
